Some times you just have to have fun.  I doubt anyone would say I am a tight painter but just in case "Being Fearless" is about not hanging on to your reference and about color breaking.  Its about letting go and having fun.  Enjoy!

Very confused on how this all works, with uploading from my phone to my web album.  Here is my attempt at it!

I have been working on portraits with 2 models this one is my 2nd sitting with my female model.

Enjoy!

This has been a fun challenge.  I will probably start another rock painting to work out how to make the rocks glisten with water.

Another Rainy Day
Work in Progress

This is another start on my rainy day adventure.  While I wait for Albert to dry, I am having a go at my model in the rainy day series.

This is my block in for the Einstein challenge.  I will refine this as I go from now on.  It is VERY intimidating painting such an iconic person.  It challenges you to make sure your measurements are accurate. I am having fun with Albert.  I will be adding color next time around.  Not sure which way I will be going on the color - its all relative right?Peggy

Bid Here

This painting was first painted in the traditional realism manner then scrubbed out while still wet and repainted in blocks of color.  Stepping into breaking it down a third and forth time, until I have this result.  Some of us see the slanted lines and automatically want to straighten them, that's just nature.  The challenge was (for me) not to straighten out those strokes.  My head is still saying wipe it out one more time and straighten those strokes. My hand says NO ! I won't NO !   Will I noodle this some more?  Io non so. Thank you Ann Feldman for your workshop !

Enjoy,
Peggy

How I Felt After My First Martini
6x6
Oil on canvas board

This painting started out with a purple background, then grey and blue and now white.  I may change it up again because I am still swirling the idea around.  The dizzy feeling I got taking my first sip is pretty accurately called back.  My cousin Suzie Thom first introduced me to martinis - she looked so glamorous sipping away at various parties.  Finally, I asked her to fix me one.  YUK - I am not much of a drinker and that was some experience.  Many, Many Years later I tried an Apple Martini and was won over.  IF I want a martini now it would be an Apple Martini or  I will just paint one.  Its cheaper, and has no side effects. So here is my first Apple Martini and effects thereof.

Block In Day One

I am trying out the method taught by Kerry Dunn and thinly blocking in my geometric drawing of my model today.  We only had 1-1/2 hours this sitting. Let us say that homework takes precedence over modeling! (I agree) We had fun with the time we had.  I wish now I had taken a photo of the envelope stage of the drawing and then another as I marked the placement of the features.  During her breaks she had a peek and was, I think, intrigued with the process.  I did not get to details at this point just color notes, but, when she left she agreed that it looked enough like her - THE STAMP of APPROVAL !  I can't wait for our next session.

Thank you,
Peggy

Rainy Day Blue Umbrella
6x6
Oil

SOLD

This is a painting inspired by a photo by Ruth Archer  the "Blue Umbrella".  I wanted to do the Blame it On the Rain Daily challenge and this one suited nicely.  I have left the street out, eliminated some people and other elements from the scene.  Thank you Ruth for letting me use your photograph. I hope you like my interpretation.
Enjoy !

6 hour long pose with model

Kerry Dunn

Workshop

Stage 1

Stage 3

The painting is not complete but not having the model in front of me any longer;  I will not be doing much more, if I do, it will be suggesting the earring on her left ear.   I like to jot the model's name on my canvas - sometimes I get so engrossed in what I am doing I forget
and that is not a good thing!

Thank you to Frankie Johnson of Mainstreet Art Center

and

Kerry Dunn for this awesome workshop!

Thank you very much to all our models - Great Job!

Opposite Tomato

This really made my brain hurt LOL... I created and destroyed this so many times I ran out of orange paint.

The challenge was to take a painting you have and create its opposite, so darks become lights and lights become darks.  As well as opposite on the color wheel.  So my orange tomato had to become a purple tomato. my highlighs - darklights....

See what I mean?  Doesn't your brain hurt too?  Enjoy!

Day 24, more Ellipses - I can't wait to get to Ann Feldman's workshop to hear about her "easy ellipses" !!!

In case your wondering, I have 2 paintings going for Day 24.  However, the set up with the cherries the paint was just sliding around and making me crazy. I set it aside for the cup and creamer jug.  I simplified the shape of the tea cup and took off on the second painting for day 24 I Had to get one done!

Day 23

This is Day 23 and at open studio today I painted our model Mary.  This is about 1-1/2 hours and it was freezing inside there today !  Poor Mary's nose got redder by the minute and I don't know who was shaking more by the time I stopped.  I did not stay for the last sittings so this is not nearly done.  I did take some photos but I rarely finish from the photos - but hey, maybe I will.  Thank you to Mary and all of the open studio artists for another fine day.

Day 21

Day 21, still trying to work on ellipses - this is a block in of a little vase and pot I have on my self in the studio.  Light was streaming in through the window and I loved the shadows - probably because most mornings I am still in bed , so I never see this particular cast shadow pattern.  This painting is certainly not finished but I had to post it or I would be a day behind.  The size is 6x6 - which I have done of few of but NOW I realize that maybe my size 8 brushes are just TOO big for this format.

Send me your titles !

On Day 15, I got ahead of myself.  This took 2 entire wipe offs to get the shapes correctly.  I work alla prima and I do not draw.  I will revisit this subject I think since I had fun with this one.

So to add to my list:

Drapery
Ellipses
Boxes
tba

So much fun finding ways to approach a subject.
I believe that today's painting will be a live model and several of our fellow daily painters will be there.  I so enjoy seeing each person's interpretation of the subject ! Can't wait to get started.

Portrait
©Peggy Schumm 2014

Day 14 of 30 daily paintings, all my still life set up tables are full of day 12 & 13, which I am hoping to finish up.  So day 14 became a quick study from a photo.  Yikes ! 6x6 is a small area to paint a portrait. Finished or not here he is.

Also, I am running out of room to store all the wet canvas.  I may just get out my grand-kids acrylics for the day 15.

Day 13
January 13, 2014

Lemonade
11x14
Oil
Still Life

Day 13, back to my ellipses.  This is the beginning block in.  In order to make this work I am letting it dry a bit.  Usually, I work alla prima but the ellipses have me going - I am thinking that stepping back and letting sit for a day will allow me to make the corrections necessary to bring this to conclusion.

My worry is that I will not be able to leave it be and therefore, get behind in the 30 paintings in 30 days.  Did the challenge say that we had to bring it to a finish?

For background drapery, I sourced my closet instead of the fabric shop.  I came up with a few items that have the color I want for future.  Which brings me to another of my phobia drapery, until now, I did not realize I had so many !   The list is growing:
Ellipses
Drapery
TBA

Who know what else I will discover on this adventure?

Still having Fun,
Peggy

Well, Well, I dove in and tried the ellipse again for Day 12 of the challenge.  I must have worked on this one twice as long as any of the others. It still needs some nice juicy paint, but, the goal is not necessarily to finish right now....

I am too tired to say more at the moment.  It is a workout LOL

Day 11
January 11, 2014

Today I blocked in Day 11 -

"Tea & Crackers"

11 x 14

oil on canvas board

©Peggy Schumm 2014

Tea & Crackers  is not completed.  I block in the color very loosely and after I am satisfied with the over all placement I take a soft brush and blend out all the edges, so I will be able to continue.  At this stage I do not want to worry about the edges - that's later. The cast shadow needs to be put in and then I will brighten up the highlights, tidy up and get those edges where they need to be.

Each of the paintings in the challenge have been approximately 1 - 2 hours of work.

Even though this one will need much more work its my entry for day 11.

January 10, 2014

Radish Salad
11x14
Oil
$130.00

©Peggy Schumm 2014

Day 10 of 30 paintings in 30 days challenge.  I went to my fridge and grabbed these to do my 10th painting.  I did not intend to have them end up in the middle of the painting but my first idea - which I started with; was to tape off the lower third and the left third (L) and then paint a veggie vendor sign with the price of the radishes.  It really did not look nice with the rest of the painting and I scraped it off.  It may work for a different piece but not for this one.

Bonn Appetite !
