Set Up for Painting
"Cream In My Tea"
Day 24, more Ellipses - I can't wait to get to Ann Feldman's workshop to hear about her "easy ellipses" !!!
In case your wondering, I have 2 paintings going for Day 24. However, the set up with the cherries the paint was just sliding around and making me crazy. I set it aside for the cup and creamer jug. I simplified the shape of the tea cup and took off on the second painting for day 24 I Had to get one done!

Day 23
This is Day 23 and at open studio today I painted our model Mary. This is about 1-1/2 hours and it was freezing inside there today ! Poor Mary's nose got redder by the minute and I don't know who was shaking more by the time I stopped. I did not stay for the last sittings so this is not nearly done. I did take some photos but I rarely finish from the photos - but hey, maybe I will. Thank you to Mary and all of the open studio artists for another fine day.

Day 21
Day 21, still trying to work on ellipses - this is a block in of a little vase and pot I have on my self in the studio. Light was streaming in through the window and I loved the shadows - probably because most mornings I am still in bed , so I never see this particular cast shadow pattern. This painting is certainly not finished but I had to post it or I would be a day behind. The size is 6x6 - which I have done of few of but NOW I realize that maybe my size 8 brushes are just TOO big for this format.
Send me your titles !

On Day 15, I got ahead of myself. This took 2 entire wipe offs to get the shapes correctly. I work alla prima and I do not draw. I will revisit this subject I think since I had fun with this one.
So to add to my list:
Drapery
Ellipses
Boxes
tba
So much fun finding ways to approach a subject.
I believe that today's painting will be a live model and several of our fellow daily painters will be there. I so enjoy seeing each person's interpretation of the subject ! Can't wait to get started.

Day 14 of 30 daily paintings, all my still life set up tables are full of day 12 & 13, which I am hoping to finish up. So day 14 became a quick study from a photo. Yikes ! 6x6 is a small area to paint a portrait. Finished or not here he is.
Also, I am running out of room to store all the wet canvas. I may just get out my grand-kids acrylics for the day 15.

Still Life
Day 13, back to my ellipses. This is the beginning block in. In order to make this work I am letting it dry a bit. Usually, I work alla prima but the ellipses have me going - I am thinking that stepping back and letting sit for a day will allow me to make the corrections necessary to bring this to conclusion.
My worry is that I will not be able to leave it be and therefore, get behind in the 30 paintings in 30 days. Did the challenge say that we had to bring it to a finish?
For background drapery, I sourced my closet instead of the fabric shop. I came up with a few items that have the color I want for future. Which brings me to another of my phobia drapery, until now, I did not realize I had so many ! The list is growing:
Ellipses
Drapery
TBA
Who know what else I will discover on this adventure?
Still having Fun,

Well, Well, I dove in and tried the ellipse again for Day 12 of the challenge. I must have worked on this one twice as long as any of the others. It still needs some nice juicy paint, but, the goal is not necessarily to finish right now....
I am too tired to say more at the moment. It is a workout LOL
Enjoy,

Day 11
January 11, 2014
Today I blocked in Day 11 -
"Tea & Crackers"
11 x 14
oil on canvas board
©Peggy Schumm 2014
Tea & Crackers is not completed. I block in the color very loosely and after I am satisfied with the over all placement I take a soft brush and blend out all the edges, so I will be able to continue. At this stage I do not want to worry about the edges - that's later. The cast shadow needs to be put in and then I will brighten up the highlights, tidy up and get those edges where they need to be.
Each of the paintings in the challenge have been approximately 1 - 2 hours of work.
Even though this one will need much more work its my entry for day 11.

Day 10 of 30 paintings in 30 days challenge. I went to my fridge and grabbed these to do my 10th painting. I did not intend to have them end up in the middle of the painting but my first idea - which I started with; was to tape off the lower third and the left third (L) and then paint a veggie vendor sign with the price of the radishes. It really did not look nice with the rest of the painting and I scraped it off. It may work for a different piece but not for this one.
Bonn Appetite !

This little painting was fun to work on. My daughter gave this perfume for Christmas. I asked her how she remembered it was my favorite? She replied," I used it all up on you when I was a teenager." Ah... LOL So, it became the inspiration for Day 9.
Enjoy

January 8, 2014
"My Giraffe Face"
9x12
SOLD
Animals
Oil
Day 8 of the 30 paintings in 30 days started out well, last night I decided to paint my FB giraffe face since I answered one of those quizzes they pass around incorrectly and my punishment was to post the profile picture of me as a giraffe... I am a bit more comfortable painting her than still life. I mostly paint portraits of people. I know the anatomy is totally different, but, for me it has eyes, a nose and ears so - it makes me more comfortable than a cup and saucer. I will get back to working on still life since it IS my biggest challenge and I need to practice. Those darn Ellipses make me crazy !
I got a big kick out of seeing one of my friends chose the same subject and post it today too ! Great minds think alike. When I saw it I wasn't going to post mine but then, heck, I didn't want to paint ANOTHER subject or I would end up way behind. So, my giraffe is my official entry to day 8 of the challenge. Lazy? IDK

A Light Lunch
6x6
Still Life
Oil on Board
$125.00
Hello again, I have my incandescent bulbs all plated up for day 7 of the challenge. My friend Tim R. gave me a great suggestion; closing my eyes and picturing a blank canvas and see what happens. The result is my play on words painting "A Light Lunch". Thanks Tim, I have had one more "Tim Vision" floating in mind - however, it will need to be on a much larger scale but if I can pull it off successfully, it will be really fun ! Stay tuned ! Peggy

Here we are at day 6 and I learned another thing about round objects. I may have been told this before but this time I got it! What a thrill. I painted them first as cubes. then nibbled off a slice at a time until I came close to the shape I was looking for. I wonder if the premier of Downton Abbey influenced my choice of subject or the fact that I was hungry. In any case, I hope to leave this up so I can work on the color a bit more. Still having fun ! Thank you for all your encouragement !

This is Day 5
January 5, 2014
This is a photo of my work on this day's subject with set up.
I am not at all happy with my choices. I thought I would stay on the theme of stuff in my office and I was working on a brief today so I chose that. The above photo is my set up including the work in progress.
Several things went wrong I think. I do not like my method of sketching in the whole thing. I feel I would have been better off with my usual block in method and work up toward the light instead of drawing out the sheet of paper and then trying to work around it (Carol Marine has a phrase for that! I wish I could recall what she said). I was thinking that since the sheet is such a crucial and recognizable item it was best to draw it as accurately as possible. To me, it lacks the loose painterly feeling I enjoy about painting.
So, even though I have until midnight of the 5th, I learned something from this exercise and do not feel it is a total loss. Who knows ? Once it is dryer I may dabble back in and see if I can get to were I want it to be - I do have 'til midnight.
The challenge was to paint 30 paintings in 30 days - not paint 30 master pieces LOL so its all good! Thanks for looking. Feel free to leave your comments.

Its is only day 4 and I am wondering what I am going to do next? I have a few more objects on my desk - my ink stamper, Cell phone, and my post It Notes. This mouse and pen set interested me because of the reflections of the pink mouse in the silver pen. My hands shake and made it difficult to zoom in on all those interesting reflections - good thing I like to paint LOOSE !
Enjoy ! See you tomorrow, Peggy

This is my first painting in the 30 paintings in 30 days challenge. I only got as far as the block in on this one. I look forward to seeing how far I go and how much improvement I achieve. Several of my friends are also painting away at this challenge. Please follow my Blog if you can and let me know if YOU see a difference. Thank you. Peggy
